Good people in bad systems

…somehow make it work.

It’s true that some systems are so overwhelmingly terrible that they drive good people out of them and collapse under their own weight. But most bad systems aren’t bad enough to drown the skills, efforts, and patience of great labor. If fantastic people are in the system, the work gets done.

On the other hand, the best system in the world isn’t going to magically turn lousy, unproductive people into valuable teammates. No collection of rules, regulations, and incentives can trick your team into being great.

Want to build something powerful? The system isn’t the answer. The people are the answer. Try to make sure the system doesn’t get in the way and find great people to take care of the rest.
