My real name is Karen,which is a name for girls in England and in the USA,but it is a name for boys in my country.I live in Armenia.I want people to call me Leonardo or David.I like one of your books,which calls Wonders of the World.I like there almost everything.I ask you to write some information about Armenia.You can write about Qarahunch which is older than Stonehenge and was built by Brits.They went to Britain from Armenia and built Stonehenge.You can also find similarity in the names of Stonehenge and Qarahunch. Qar means stone and hunch became henge.There is a building in Turkey which was built in the same way. There is also a theory that is was built by aliens.
I am 17 years old and I study at school named after Nicolai Vasilievich Gogol in Armenia.My full name is Karen Sargsyan.

Precisely, Mark.

Full disclosure here: though I grew up on a small ranch in northeast Texas, there's much about my background quite remote from that of the typical rural Texan. In terms of number of years, the most salient difference is that I have lived in Asia 24 of the past 26 years -- the past 21 continuously. (China, Macau when it still belonged to Portugal, and for the last 17 years, Thailand.)

In Asia, I've been on the receiving end of the negatives of largely homogenous societies (though I hasten to add that I also found considerable good in those societies). That experience has done much to convince me of the advantages of a multicultural society, though those advantages don't sweep away the problems that a mixed society has to deal with.

This is a good blog, Mark. I've bookmarked it.

@Mekhong - Thank you!

It has often been pointed out to me that the phenomenon you're describing is exactly the cause of the anger that subset expresses. They feel that their way of life, exemplified by white privilege, is under attack. To be fair, it is.

I think the fundamental disconnect on this issue is between one group that views diversity as weakening America by enforcing non-white homogeneity and another group that views diversity as strengthening America by promoting non-white heterogeneity.

Mr. Truman, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the value of diveristy in America.

However, I must note the disheartening fact -- or I believe it to be fact -- that there is a substantial subset of Americans who simply don't see it that way, but instead believe America was founded and meant always to be a country in which white Protestants were the dominant group.

For the record, I'm a 60-year-old white man, raised Protestant, so I'm not some young "person of color," as the phrase goes, whining. ("Whining" being the definition given by the aforementioned subset anytime someone points out any inequality.)

If it is your business, I agree with you totally. If you are middle management, Team buy in is your success. Make the ultimate decision but use the staff meeting to come up with how they want to implement the decision.
